420 Race Team

Objective:

To build upon the skill base from the 420 class and prepare sailors for racing—working on both fleet and team racing skills

Duration:

4-week or 8-week sessions

Previous Experience or Knowledge:

Completion of skills assessments in 420 class

Sailors must be able to complete a swim test

Age Group:

12-18 years.

Minimum weight 90 pounds.

Boat and equipment:

Club 420 provided by WYCUSCG.

USCG approved personal flotation device (PFD) (life jacket)

Assessment:

Sailors will work on completing skills in US Sailing Small Boat Performance Sailor Certification Record “Little Green Book” through page 13

Days and Times:

Monday (ECSA Team Races) 12-4 p.m.

Tuesday 1-4 p.m.

Wednesday Races 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Thursday (ECSA Fleet Races) 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

 

By the end of this class, sailor should be able to do the following:

Sailing:
  • Demonstrate understanding of race starting concepts, sailing a race course and finishing
  • Demonstrate proper rounding or marks and obstructions, including communication within and outside the boat
  • Sailing without a rudder.
  • Sailing backwards.
  • Sailing with spinnaker and crew on trapeze
  • Understanding current

 

Rigging:
  • Independently rig and tune a C420
  • Rig Spinnaker and set pole
  • Fit and adjust trapeze harness for proper use and safety.

 

Knots and Seamanship:
  • All knots through 420 plus splicing a three-strand line and whipping a line
