Adult Sailing

Objective:

Introduce adults to sailing through the supportive group environment of the Beetle.

Duration:

4-week or 8-week sessions

Previous Experience or Knowledge:

No previous experience necessary.

Sailors must be able to complete a swim test

Age Group:

Sailors must be 21 years old at start of class.

Verification of birth date may be required.

Boat and equipment:

Club 420 provided by WYCUSCG.

USCG approved personal flotation device (PFD) (life jacket)

Assessment:

Sailors will work on developing skills outlined in the US Sailing Small Boat Sailor Certification Record Book through Page 11. (“The Little Red Book”)

Days and Times:

Wednesday and Friday 1pm – 3pm

Thursday: Regatta day

By the end of this class, sailor should be able to do the following:

Sailing:
  • Understand wind direction.
  • Experience steering a boat, tacking and jibing.
  • Experience trimming a sail.
  • Learn points of sail.
  • Sail a straight course and learn proper tiller grasp.
  • Rigging:
  • Rig and de-rig a Beetle as a group.
  • Demonstrate proper care of equipment.
  • Knots and Seamanship:
  • Demonstrate cleat hitch and figure eight knot.
