Beginner Optimist

Objective: Introduce new sailors to the fundamentals of single-handed sailing in light and calm breezes.

Duration: 4-week or 8-week sessions

Previous Experience or Knowledge: No previous experience necessary, though Beginning Sailing is recommended.

Age Group: Sailors must be 8 years old at start of class.

Sailors must be able to complete a swim test.

Verification of birth date may be required.

Boat and equipment: Optimist Dinghy. Sailors may bring their own boat or rent from WYC. USCG approved personal flotation device (PFD) (life jacket)

Assessment: Sailors will work on developing skills outlined in the Sailing Small Boat Sailor Certification Record Book through Page 11. (“The Little Red Book”) .

Days and Times: Monday, Wednesday, Friday 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.

By the end of this class, sailor should be able to do the following:

Rigging: Rig and de-rig an Optimist independently

Sailing: Understand wind direction. Demonstrate proper care of equipment. Embark from and return safely to dock or beach. Sail a straight course, learn proper tiller grasp. Understand safety positions. Learn and demonstrate points of sail. Demonstrate proper tacking. Understand basic rules of the road and boating safety.

Knots and Seamanship: Demonstrate cleat hitch, coiling, figure eight, bowline.
