Beginner Sailing

 

Objective:

Introduce children to sailing in multi-handed boats including

the RS Quest and Beetle Cats. Possibly introduce sailors to

Optimist dinghy.

Duration:

4-week or 8-week sessions

Previous Experience or Knowledge:

No previous experience necessary. Sailors must be able to complete a swim test.

Age Group:

Sailors must be 7 years old at start of class. Verification of birth date may be required.

Boat and equipment:

USCG approved personal flotation device (PFD) (life jacket)

Assessment:

Sailors will work on developing skills outlined in the US Sailing Small Boat Sailor Certification Record Book through Page 11. (“The Little Red Book”)

Days and Times:

Tuesday and Thursday 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.

By the end of this class, sailor should be able to do the following:

Sailing:
  • Understand wind direction.
  • Steer the boat.
  • Learn about points of sail.

 

Knots and Seamanship:
  • Understand basic rules of the road.
  • Identify common knots (cleat hitch, square knot, half hitch, bowline).
