Dear Weekapaug Yacht Club Members,

I am delighted to announce the start of the 2012 season at the Weekapaug Yacht Club! Hooray! A brief overview of the season follows:

Sunday, July 1 -  Blessing of the Fleet and Commodore’s BBQ
Friday, July 6 -  Commodore’s Reception
Tuesday, July 17 -  Nat Earle Regatta
Saturday, July 21 -  Annual Meeting
Saturday, July 28  - Series Awards and Pot Luck Dinner
Monday, July 30  - August Classes Begin
Saturday, August 25 -  Series Awards and Pot Luck Dinner
Sunday, August 26  - WYC Pack Up

Social events for juniors include weekly bingo evenings, softball games and movie nights. We will need volunteers to help run the junior activities, so please sign up at registration. Unfortunately, the Nat Earle Walk/Run and the Art Show will not take place this year. However, Rear Commodore Jim Buffum has planned talks and events with great sailing themes. We will send you reminders as the events approach.

Last summer, Vice Commodore Geri Abdoo and others hosted a very successful “Raise the Roof” fundraiser. “Raise the Roof” afforded the club a new roof (installed this spring) and a new “Big Room” floor (to be installed in June). Nat Earle funds supported purchases of sailing equipment for the Junior Program. This summer we are taking a more modest approach to fundraising - but our needs remain real. Please donate to the comprehensive Campaign for WYC to support our overall program, facility and community. Also, please contribute to the Nat Earle Fund to support junior sailing. We are in special need of new 420 boats to allow our sailors to be competitive with peer clubs. Donations to both funds will assist us with those purchases. We greatly appreciate your immediate support!

Once again, Mary Raftery will manage the club and Kathryn Smith will run the Kiddie Camp. Seasoned Head Instructor Meredith Elia will lead a crew of experienced senior and junior instructors to teach all ages and levels of sailors. We are set with a great staff!

The junior and adult sailing programs schedule are identical to last year’s. The schedule is copied below for your convenience. The expertise and flexibility of our sailing staff will help novices to sail and racers to speed ahead. Everyone will enjoy her or his time on the water!

2012 Class Schedule

July Classes: Monday, July 2nd through Friday, July 27th with Awards & Potluck on Saturday, July 28th.
August Classes: Monday, July 30th through Friday, August 24th with Awards & Potluck on Saturday, August 25th. The Club closes on August 26th..

We continue to do our best to keep costs reasonable. That said, there will be increases in dues and fees to maintain our program at the highest and safest levels. Sailors participating in off-pond races will pay a regatta fee of $100 per month or $200 for the season. We will send a separate letter to these families will be in June following registration.

The Weekapaug Yacht Club website, www.weekapaugyachtclub.com, continues to be a valuable membership resource. Class descriptions, calendars of events and any updates, including race results, are posted regularly. We thank Eileen and Dave Ingham for their fabulous website work.  Member registration is open and ready.  If you have forgotten your password, visit the homepage and click on the “Forgot your password?” link. When you’ve completed inputting your selections, print the registration and send it with a check to:

Welcome to the Weekapaug Yacht Club.

Dating back to the late 1880's, the WYC is located on Quonochontaug Pond in Westerly, RI.  The Weekapaug Yacht Club is open to families and individuals who reside in the communities bordering Quonochontaug Pond.  Membership entitles families to participate in WYC social events, enroll children in sailing programs and kiddie camp, participate in weekly club races (Optimists, Beetles and 420s), and use the docks and facilities.
